We’ve been building WordPress sites for nine years now. Updates have always been a problem. Back in the day, WordPress.org promised security releases with two years of security updates and no functionality changes. Those promises were broken when WordPress 2.0 stable version was abandoned.
Since then, our clients and yours have had to face four major WordPress releases per year, any one of which could knock out anywhere between 10% and 75% of the functionality of their site if it didn’t take the site down altogether.
For years, we did controlled upgrades for our clients at $100/per upgrade. It was a good business but one that made both us and our clients curse. With four updates per year, $400/year per site just on updates alone. We just didn’t have time to do all that work as we were building new websites.
After the shortcodes fiasco and arrogant threats from core to remove the standard menu building interface, we’ve said enough is enough.
We will maintain a stable version of Businesspress with no more than one major upgrade per year. The rest of the time it will just be security updates. Nothing to destabilise your clients’ sites or key plugins.
While we are at it, we’ll be cleaning out the Automattic advertising (Jetpack, Vaultpress, Akismet). The dashboard will be rebuilt for functionality and not advertising. Support links will go to you and not to WordPress.
